Swimming Pools & Your Asthma

There have been some discussion of controversies surrounding swimming pools and asthma. A study published in the journal Pediatrics concluded "chlorinated pool exposure seems to contribute significantly to the burden of asthma and respiratory allergies among adolescents." In the last poll many of you said that swimming improves your asthma.
The research claims that chlorine may increase risk of and exacerbate asthma. I wondered what sort of pools our readers are using and if many of you avoid chlorinated pools. Does chlorination worsen or exacerbate your asthma? What do you think? Take the poll and leave a comment.

It's official: Tanning is an addiction

According to a recently published article in the Archives of Dermatology indoor tanning qualifies as an addiction.
The study surveyed University of Albany, in Albany, NY, college students. Of the 229 responders who have used tanning beds, 39.3% met the criteria for addiction. Those that were considered addicted to tanning showed classic signs of addiction - several unsuccessful attempts to completely stop or cut back on tanning; feeling annoyed when they were told they should stop; and skipping work, school or other scheduled activities to go to the tanning salon.
Slightly of two-thirds of the study participants were female.

Researchers say non-melanoma skin cancer at epidemic level

According to a study published in the March issue of the Archive of Dermatology, the rate of non-melanoma skin cancer in the U.S. is reaching epidemic proportions, with more than two million people affected in 2006.
In that year, an estimated 3,507,693 cases of non-melanoma skin cancer were treated, affecting 2,152,500 people according to Howard Rogers, MD, PhD, of Advanced Dermatology in Norwich, Conn., and colleagues.
But between 2002 and 2006, Rogers and colleagues found that the number of procedures for nonmelanoma skin cancer per affected person increased 1.5% and the number of people who had at least one procedure increased by 14.3%.
"There is an epidemic of nonmelanoma skin cancer in the U.S.," they wrote, adding that "educational programs emphasizing sun protection have mainly been disappointing in slowing skin cancer rates."
"This is only going to get worse," said Dr. Suephy Chen, an associate professor of dermatology at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta told Fox47. "Our population is aging. Those people who grew up in the 1970s and 1980s when there was not a big sun-protection message out there are now coming into their 50s and 60s and are starting to develop skin cancers."
To lessen your chances of getting skin cancer, dermatologists recommend applying broad-spectrum sunscreen liberally and often; wearing hats and other protective clothing when out in the sun; avoiding sun exposure when the sun's rays are the strongest -- between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. -- and never using tanning beds. This advice is especially useful in the upcoming summer months.
It's especially important to take these steps with children and teens, Rogers said. Skin cancer is turning up in younger and younger patients. In the past week or so, he removed non-melanoma cancer off the cheek of a 17-year-old boy and removed a melanoma from an 18-year-old girl.

Is PLX4032 the future of melanoma treatment?

The New York Times has an interesting article today looking at the effect of a cancer drug called PLX4032, which is currently being tested on melanoma patients.
The drug, which targets a specific gene mutation that drives cancer growth, has been shown to shrink tumors by more than 30% in 9 of the 16 melanoma patients in the phase 1 trial. However, it will take much more research before this treatment option is widely available.

Drive Less, Drive Smart
Every time you leave your car at home you reduce air pollution, lower greenhouse gas emissions, improve your health and save money.
Walk or ride a bicycle for short trips, or take public transportation for longer ones. In 30 minutes, most people can easily walk a mile or more, and you can cover even more ground on a bicycle, bus, subway or commuter train. Research has shown that people who use public transportation are healthier than those who don’t. Families that use public transportation can save enough money annually to cover their food costs for the year.
When you do drive, take the few minutes needed to make sure your engine is well maintained and your tires properly inflated.
Eat Your Vegetables
Eating less meat and more fruits, grains and vegetables can help the environment more than you may realize. Eating meat, eggs and dairy products contributes heavily to global warming, because raising animals for food produces many more greenhouse gas emissions than growing plants. A 2006 report by the University of Chicago found that adopting a vegan diet does more to reduce global warming than switching to a hybrid car. Raising animals for food also uses enormous amounts of land, water, grain and fuel. Every year in the United States alone, 80 percent of all agricultural land, half of all water resources, 70 percent of all grain, and one-third of all fossil fuels are used to raise animals for food.
Making a salad doesn’t take any more time than cooking a hamburger and it’s better for you—and for the environment.
Switch to Reusable Shopping Bags
Producing plastic bags uses a lot of natural resources, and most end up as litter that fouls landscapes, clogs waterways, and kills thousands of marine mammals that mistake the ubiquitous bags for food. Worldwide, up to a trillion plastic bags are used and discarded every year—more than a million per minute. The count for paper bags is lower, but the cost in natural resources is still unacceptably high—especially when there is a better alternative. Reusable shopping bags, made of materials that don’t harm the environment during production and don’t need to be discarded after each use, reduce pollution and save resources that could be put to better uses than making plastic and paper bags. Reusable bags are convenient and come in a variety of sizes and styles. Some reusable bags can even be rolled or folded small enough to fit into a purse or pocket.
Change Your Light Bulbs
Compact fluorescent light bulbs and light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are more energy efficient and less expensive to use than the traditional incandescent bulbs invented by Thomas Edison. For example, compact fluorescent light bulbs use at least two-thirds less energy than standard incandescent bulbs to provide the same amount of light, and they last up to 10 times longer. Compact fluorescent light bulbs also generate 70 percent less heat, so they are safer to operate and can reduce energy costs associated with cooling homes and offices. According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, if every U.S. household replaced just one regular incandescent light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb, it would prevent 90 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions from power plants, the equivalent of taking 7.5 million cars off the road. On top of that, for every incandescent bulb you replace with an approved compact fluorescent light bulb, you will save consumers $30 in energy costs over the life of the bulb.

10 Easy Ways Your Business Can Go Green

1. Turning off equipment when it's not being used. This can reduce the energy used by 25 percent; turning off the computers at the end of the day can save an additional 50 percent.
2. Encouraging communications by email, and reading email messages onscreen to determine whether it's necessary to print them. If it's not, don't!
3. Reducing fax-related paper waste by using a fax-modem and by using a fax cover sheet only when necessary. Fax-modems allow documents to be sent directly from a computer, without requiring a printed hard copy.
4. Producing double-sided documents whenever possible.
5. Not leaving taps dripping; always close them tightly after use. (One drop wasted per second wastes 10,000 litres per year.)
6. Installing displacement toilet dams in toilet reservoirs. Placing one or two plastic containers filled with stones (not bricks) in the toilet's reservoir will displace about 4 litres of water per flush - a huge reduction of water use over the course of a year.
7. Finding a supply of paper with maximum available recycled content.
8. Choosing suppliers who take back packaging for reuse.
9. Instigating an ongoing search for "greener" products and services in the local community. The further your supplies or service providers have to travel, the more energy will be used to get them to you.
10. Before deciding whether you need to purchase new office furniture, see if your existing office furniture can be refurbished. It's less expensive than buying new and better for the environment.

GAGAL JANTUNG DIASTOLIK

Gagal jantung bisa bermanifestasi sebagai gagal jantung sistolik akibat disfungsi sistolik maupun gagal jantung diastolik akibat disfungsi diastolik.1 Pengetahun tentang gagal jantung diastolik akhir-akhir ini meningkat sebagai suatu masalah klinis epidemiologis yang sedang berkembang.2 Gagal jantung diastolik pada hakekatnya susah didefinisikan, didiagnosis dan diobati.
Sepertiga sampai setengah dari penderita yang masuk rumah sakit dengan sindroma gagal jantung yakni adanya bendungan sistemik dan bendungan paru mempunyai fungsi ssitolik yang normal atau hampir normal. Gagal jantung diastolik kerapkali bersama sama dengan adanya hipertensi sistemik yang kurang terkontrol. Faktor-faktor yang berkontribusi merubah fungsi diastolik ventrikel kiri antara lain adalah fibrosis miokard, hipertrofi, iskemia dan peningkatan pascabeban.3
Pengetahuan tentang vaskularisasi dan fungsi ginjal juga penting terutama pada penderita hipertensi berat.
Pada orang tua dengan gagal jantung dan hipertensi berat bisa dijumpai adanya stenosis arteri renalis4, sehingga mungkin perlu dilakukan arteriografi arteri renalis. Pada penderita dengan gagal jantung bendungan pada populasi Framingham study, ditemukan 51% dengan fraksi ejeksi sama atau lebih dari 0,50.1,5 Tidak ada data yang jelas tentang perbedaan prognosis, mortalitas jangka panjang maupun rawat
inap berulang antara penderita dengan gagal jantung sistolik dan gagal jantung diastolik.5 Mortalitas gagal jantung diastolik berkisar 8-28% pertahun dan populasi berkulit hitam lebih rentan dibanding kulit berwarna. Juga disebutkan bahwa wanita lebih sering dibanding lakilaki terutama mereka yang berumur lanjut.2,6
Penting diketahui bahwa disfungsi sistolik dan diastolik seringkali dijumpai bersamaan dan timbulnya gagal jantung sistolik bisa mempengaruhi fungsi diastolik.7,8 Penilaian terhadap struktur dan fungsi ventrikel kiri dengan ekokardiografi sangat penting sebelum memulai terapi pada penderita dengan gagal jantung oleh karena terapi terhadap disfungsi sistolik mungkin tidak efektif atau bahkan kontraproduktif bila gejala gejala yang ditemukan disebabkan oleh disfungsi diastolik.4
Gagal jantung diastolik terjadi akibat adanya resistensi abnormal terhadap pengisian ventrikel, yang memerlukan peningkatan tekanan pengisian atrium kiri untuk mencapau curah jantung yang mencukupi.5 Proses pengisian jantung umumnya dan ventrikel kiri khususnya amat penting dipahami untuk menjelaskan gejala dantanda yang timbul akibat disfungsi diastolik ventrikel kiri.
Disfungsi diastolik sulit dibedakan dari disfungsi sistolik bila hanya berdasarkan pada keluhan penderita, pemeriksaan fisik, gambaran elektrokardiogram dan foto thoraks, sehingga penegakan diagnosis disfungsi diastolik merupakan suatu tantangan bagi para klinisi.
Oleh karena itu sangat diperlukan cara yang lebih tepat untuk menilai fungsi diastolik ventrikel kiri. Cara noninvasif dengan ekokardiografi-Doppler, Doppler M-mode warna dan pencitraan Doppler jaringan saat ini amat populer digunakan dalam pemeriksaan fungsi diastolik ventrikel kiri.9,10,11

Dalam penelitian ini, peningkatan risiko kanker seperti kanker ginjal dan uterus pada wanita dan kanker hati pada pria sangatlah mengejutkan. Hasil dari sebuah penelitian lain menyatakan bahwa obesitas adalah penyebab ke-2 kanker setelah merokok di Amerika Serikat.
Di dunia, angka kejadian obesitas makin meningkat dan merokok berkurang , sehingga diperkirakan bahwa obesitas 1 dekade berikutnya akan menjadi faktor risiko pertama terjadinya kanker di Amerika Serikat. Hasil dari penelitian ini dipresentasikan oleh the American Institute for Cancer Research and the World Cancer Research Fund International, dengan tema: Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity, and the Prevention of Cancer: A Global Perspective. Kini diperkirakan 2/3 dari penduduk di Amerika kelebihan berat badan.
Di seluruh dunia, angka kejadian kanker meningkat lebih cepat daripada pertumbuhan penduduk. Walaupun telah diketahui bahwa obesitas meningkatkan angka kejadian kanker, namun risiko secara kuantistas dan kanker mana yang risikonya meningkat masih perlu evaluasi lebih lanjut. The American Institute for Cancer Research dan the World Cancer Research Fund International telah mengumpulkan anggotanya untuk mengevaluasi risiko kanker.

Goji buah super rahasia awet muda dari pegunungan Himalaya

Persetujuan internasional

Kerjasama internasional diperlukan untuk mensukseskan pengurangan gas-gas rumah kaca. Di tahun 1992, pada Earth Summit di Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 150 negara berikrar untuk menghadapi masalah gas rumah kaca dan setuju untuk menterjemahkan maksud ini dalam suatu perjanjian yang mengikat. Pada tahun 1997 di Jepang, 160 negara merumuskan persetujuan yang lebih kuat yang dikenal dengan Protokol Kyoto.

Perjanjian ini, yang belum diimplementasikan, menyerukan kepada 38 negara-negara industri yang memegang persentase paling besar dalam melepaskan gas-gas rumah kaca untuk memotong emisi mereka ke tingkat 5 persen di bawah emisi tahun 1990. Pengurangan ini harus dapat dicapai paling lambat tahun 2012. Pada mulanya, Amerika Serikat mengajukan diri untuk melakukan pemotongan yang lebih ambisius, menjanjikan pengurangan emisi hingga 7 persen di bawah tingkat 1990; Uni Eropa, yang menginginkan perjanjian yang lebih keras, berkomitmen 8 persen; dan Jepang 6 persen. Sisa 122 negara lainnya, sebagian besar negara berkembang, tidak diminta untuk berkomitmen dalam pengurangan emisi gas.

Akan tetapi, pada tahun 2001, Presiden Amerika Serikat yang baru terpilih, George W. Bush mengumumkan bahwa perjanjian untuk pengurangan karbon dioksida tersebut menelan biaya yang sangat besar. Ia juga menyangkal dengan menyatakan bahwa negara-negara berkembang tidak dibebani dengan persyaratan pengurangan karbon dioksida ini. Kyoto Protokol tidak berpengaruh apa-apa bila negara-negara industri yang bertanggung jawab menyumbang 55 persen dari emisi gas rumah kaca pada tahun 1990 tidak meratifikasinya. Persyaratan itu berhasil dipenuhi ketika tahun 2004, Presiden Rusia Vladimir Putin meratifikasi perjanjian ini, memberikan jalan untuk berlakunya perjanjian ini mulai 16 Februari 2005.

Banyak orang mengkritik Protokol Kyoto terlalu lemah. Bahkan jika perjanjian ini dilaksanakan segera, ia hanya akan sedikit mengurangi bertambahnya konsentrasi gas-gas rumah kaca di atmosfer. Suatu tindakan yang keras akan diperlukan nanti, terutama karena negara-negara berkembang yang dikecualikan dari perjanjian ini akan menghasilkan separuh dari emisi gas rumah kaca pada 2035. Penentang protokol ini memiliki posisi yang sangat kuat. Penolakan terhadap perjanjian ini di Amerika Serikat terutama dikemukakan oleh industri minyak, industri batubara dan perusahaan-perusahaan lainnya yang produksinya tergantung pada bahan bakar fosil. Para penentang ini mengklaim bahwa biaya ekonomi yang diperlukan untuk melaksanakan Protokol Kyoto dapat menjapai 300 milyar dollar AS, terutama disebabkan oleh biaya energi. Sebaliknya pendukung Protokol Kyoto percaya bahwa biaya yang diperlukan hanya sebesar 88 milyar dollar AS dan dapat lebih kurang lagi serta dikembalikan dalam bentuk penghematan uang setelah mengubah ke peralatan, kendaraan, dan proses industri yang lebih effisien.

Pada suatu negara dengan kebijakan lingkungan yang ketat, ekonominya dapat terus tumbuh walaupun berbagai macam polusi telah dikurangi. Akan tetapi membatasi emisi karbon dioksida terbukti sulit dilakukan. Sebagai contoh, Belanda, negara industrialis besar yang juga pelopor lingkungan, telah berhasil mengatasi berbagai macam polusi tetapi gagal untuk memenuhi targetnya dalam mengurangi produksi karbon dioksida.

Setelah tahun 1997, para perwakilan dari penandatangan Protokol Kyoto bertemu secara reguler untuk menegoisasikan isu-isu yang belum terselesaikan seperti peraturan, metode dan pinalti yang wajib diterapkan pada setiap negara untuk memperlambat emisi gas rumah kaca. Para negoisator merancang sistem di mana suatu negara yang memiliki program pembersihan yang sukses dapat mengambil keuntungan dengan menjual hak polusi yang tidak digunakan ke negara lain. Sistem ini disebut perdagangan karbon. Sebagai contoh, negara yang sulit meningkatkan lagi hasilnya, seperti Belanda, dapat membeli kredit polusi di pasar, yang dapat diperoleh dengan biaya yang lebih rendah. Rusia, merupakan negara yang memperoleh keuntungan bila sistem ini diterapkan. Pada tahun 1990, ekonomi Rusia sangat payah dan emisi gas rumah kacanya sangat tinggi. Karena kemudian Rusia berhasil memotong emisinya lebih dari 5 persen di bawah tingkat 1990, ia berada dalam posisi untuk menjual kredit emisi ke negara-negara industri lainnya, terutama mereka yang ada di Uni Eropa.
